Information for Patients
Spine Surgery and Implants
Most spine surgeons and pain management physicians realize that psychological factors can have an important effect on how patients tolerate and benefit from pain management procedures like reconstructive spine surgery, placement of spinal cord stimulators, or insertion of intrathecal medication pumps. Doctors hope to maximize surgery outcomes and decrease the burden that pain can cause on your daily function.
The goal of our pre-operative psychological assessment is to improve the likelihood of surgical success and get you back to your regular work and lifestyle as soon as possible. We focus on clarifying your expectations for spinal surgery or spinal implant, exploring non-medical risk factors that could affect your surgical outcome, and ensuring that you have adequate psychosocial support.
The pre-surgical evaluation consists of an interview with a clinical psychologist, psychological testing, and a thorough review of your medical records. We are usually able to send a report to your doctor and/or insurance carrier within five working days.
Some patients want additional psychological input as they prepare for spinal surgery or spinal implant. You may want psychological assistance as you go through the post-operative period and more extended physical rehabilitation. We are available for psychotherapy and psychological pain management on an hourly basis. We can also provide important referrals for exercise, nutrition, or additional psychiatric services if desired.
